Some spaces are open to visitors all day. Other places will host small group tours.

Come along to meet the people growing trees, experience the places using wood, and see first hand the role trees and timber can have in our future.

What unites everyone you will meet, is the desire to champion homegrown timber and sustainable productive woodlands for present and future generations.

Open Woods & Workshops takes place throughout June 2025

Book your place at an Open Woods & Workshops event today to learn about Wood Culture and boost your understanding of growing trees, milling timber and making within the UK. 

Do you Grow trees or use wood? Well, Open Woods & Workshops helps you establish and build connections with others in the timber supply chain. 

Are you Just keen to learn? If you’re outside the timber supply chain, maybe you just love trees, then you can learn about the country’s wood culture, its incredible places and people, and find out what is needed to support it.

Thinking about your work? You can learn about the possibilities of careers in forestry, sawmilling, making, research and associated industries by meeting people doing that work, right now! 

Open Woods and Workshops will raise funds for Woodland Heritage, allowing Open Woods and Workshops to grow and to support the charity’s wider mission.

“Angus Ross are throwing open their workshop for two wonderful events each day; an open morning in the workshop and a guided afternoon workshop tour plus woodland walk. We have a small team of dedicated and highly skilled craftsmen. Our traditional workshop has been used continuously for woodwork since 1886. The afternoon tour includes a woodland walk so we will drive in convoy to Old Castle Wood. It's peak bluebell time so we hope for a beautiful carpet of flowers.”

“Come and see a working sawmill! Visitors can choose from timed sawmill tours throughout the day. Along with Sawmill tours, we're also featuring an exhibition of makers and stands from businesses associated with the timber industry. We will also have Origin Pizza van on site as well as a tea and coffee stand. Collaboration event: the Whitney Sawmills Open Day is designed to run in partnership with tours of the Duchy of Cornwall woodlands.”

Duchy of Cornwall Woodyard and Timberline Wood, Hereford, HR2

“An opportunity to see the Duchy of Cornwall's working woodyard, with a demonstration of a mobile sawmill in action, to meet the team and have a guided tour of Timberline wood with the Deputy Head Forester. Morning refreshments will be provided in the unique surroundings of the Shenmore Lodge, built with Herefordshire oak. Collaboration event: Tours of the Duchy of Cornwall woodland are designed to compliment the open day at Whitney Sawmills, held on the same day.”

Great Park, Alder and South Sowdens Woods, Rye, East Sussex, TN31

“Visit Great Park, Alder and South Sowdens Woods for a tour and talk. Come to visit a woodland being managed, and talk to Lisa and her woodland. The woods are semi-ancient with plantations (PAWS). On the walk Tilhill forestry will describe their management. We have restarted coppicing of sweet chestnut, felled conifers and been replanting. Threats have included eight-toothed spruce beetle, deer, squirrels, and Asiatic hornet.”

Canoe paddle making workshop - To The Root, Cumbria

To The Root is focused on traditional crafts and sustainable making using locally sourced materials. We run hands-on workshops where natural resources such as wood, stone, and plant-based materials are shaped into practical, lasting pieces. Rooted in simple, time-honored techniques, our work is about crafting with care, learning from the land, and appreciating the natural materials around us.

Our workshop is based in Witherslack, in the English Lake District surrounded by rugged limestone scars and fabulous ancient woodlands.

To the Root are offering their Canoe Paddle Making course in June as part of the Open Woods & Workshops initiative.

“Witherslack Woodlands and workshops are a collective of foresters and woodworkers in the South Lake District. Our focus on wood economy and a woodland-to-workshop method gives us a unique approach to woodland management, sawmilling and carpentry and craft. Talking through species selection and planting; obstacles and issues; plans and intentions; woodland management; pest management and other topics linked to woodland creation and management. Collaboration event: This event is designed in collaboration with Williams and Cleal Furniture who are opening their doors for workshop tours on the same days.”

Nestled in a picturesque countryside setting, guests will witness first-hand the artistry and precision that go into every piece we and our students design and make. Our expert makers will lead captivating wood-related demonstrations, showcasing techniques such as steam bending. Collaboration event: This event is designed in collaboration with Woodland Heritage who are hosting guided walks of their James Wood site on the same days.”

“We'll have our yard, timber shop and showroom open, as well as stands from other companies and organisations, including Woodland Heritage, that we have a connection with - expect local clubs, professional woodworkers, tool suppliers and more. Along with stands you can look forward to woodturning and carving demonstrations, a furniture maker's open workshop, and more. There will also be a local butcher with hot pork sandwiches, as well as a free tea, coffee and cake stand. We will also have a bar stocked from our local brewery!”

“Come and visit the Treske workshops and showrooms at our Open Day! The Treske workshops and showrooms are set over three floors within a former Victorian maltings. There will be guided tours of the workshops showing the processing of raw timber to fine furniture. We will also be serving refreshments. On the tour you will move from our wood store and breakout areas where timber is selected for each commission, through our ground floor machining with a wide variety of different machines, and then up to the middle floor cabinet making and finishing area. Work in progress may include tables, chairs, specialist work for churches, and of course kitchens.”

The annual Gaze Burvill Tread for Trees & Timber returns in June in support of Woodland Heritage, raising much needed funds for the future of British woodlands. Starting at our Lodge Farm workshop, the event features a 10k and 5k route to either run or walk, navigating the beautiful South Downs countryside.

“Spend a morning at Hooke Park learning about our work at the intersection of forestry and architecture. The morning will include talks by the directors of Hooke Park and the head forester, a tour of our woodland campus and its experimental buildings and a presentation of our robotic fabrication research. A vegetarian lunch will be served in our beautiful refectory - with views of the woodland.” Collaboration event: This event has been designed to compliment two other events in West Dorset on the 28th June 2025 at John Makepeace Furniture and North Eggardon Farm, Powerstock.”

North Eggardon Farm, Powerstock, Bridport, Dorset, DT6 3ST

“After parking near the sawmill, the track leads us into Knowle Wood. We will see semi-mature oak, ash, Lawson cypress and sycamore. The walk also takes in twenty-year-old cherry, chestnut, larch, oak and red cedar which have been high pruned. We will discuss ash dieback, small scale felling and extraction, conversion and use of variety of timbers including the above. Herb Paris and Twayblade can be seen. Mappercombe has 20 woods, including eight planted since 1981. Our main aim is to produce quality timber for local use. “You are invited by John Makepeace, furniture designer and maker, to visit his home and studio at Farrs, Beaminster. You will see remarkable trees from British woodlands seasoning for future commissions.
